Warren Seddon, Director of Freedom of Information and Transparency at the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), has posted a blog about the regulator's performance over the last 12 months. Following the publication of the ICO25 strategy for Freedom of Information last July, the new approach has been a "resounding success", resulting in more action taken than in the 17 years since FOI came into force in 2005. During the 12 months, the ICO has issued 12 practice recommendations, three of which are detailed below.
Today, the ICO has issued practice recommendations and enforcement notices for five public sector bodies for failing to meet expected standards in responding to Freedom of Information Act requests.
Three practice recommendations have been issued to The London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Liverpool City Council for FOI request response times and to the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency for Freedom of Information Act Code of Practice failures.
Two enforcement notices have been issued to the Ministry of Defence and the Environment Agency relating to hundreds of overdue requests, some of which are years overdue.
