ICO fines Clearview AI Inc £7.5m

23/05/2022 | ICO

The ICO has issued Clearview AI a £7,552,800 monetary penalty and has ordered the company to delete all UK data. The enforcement notice also requires the facial recognition company to cease collecting images of UK citizens from publicly available sources on the internet. The announcement is the completion of a joint investigation with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner that led to the news in November last year from the ICO of its intention to fine Clearview AI £17m. Since then, Clearview AI announced its facial recognition software features 20 billion publicly available facial images. More significantly, the company informed investors that it expects to have 100 billion facial images by next year.
