The ICO has fined Royal Mail Group £20,000 for sending 215,202 direct marketing messages without obtaining valid consent in contravention of Regulation 22 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003. Royal mail had identified the recipients had opted out but due to a process error sent a reminder email to them anyway. The ICO further stated that it felt satisfied Royal Mail could not rely on the soft opt-in exemption.
