The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has issued enforcement notices against Dyfed Powys Police (DPP), Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and South Wales Police (SWP) for inadequate Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) performance which has led to significant backlogs in their responses.
Details of the enforcement notices were published alongside news that the ICO has recently completed consensual audits with nine police forces to assess the measures in place to support the application of the FOI. The findings of those audits resulted in 152 recommendations for improvements across seven areas. The recommendations include improving policies and procedures to mitigate against reduced staff levels and resources, as well as increasing FOI training and awareness. The ICO will revisit each police force within the next 12 months to check whether its recommendations have been actioned.
