The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has announced a notice of intent to fine TikTok £27 million for violations of UK data protection laws. The provisional view of the ICO following an investigation is that TikTok may have processed the personal data of children under 13 without parental consent. It may also have failed to provide concise, transparent information to users and unlawfully processed special category data.
The alleged transgressions occurred between May 2018 through July 2020. In a statement, Information Commissioner John Edwards said: "I've been clear that our work to better protect children online involves working with organisations but will also involve enforcement action where necessary."
According to TechCrunch, the ICOs announcement of its intention to fine TikTok follows an investigation opened in 2019 after it signalled it would look into how TikTok's data practices.
