ICO prosecutes 8 individuals over theft of road traffic accident data

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has begun criminal proceedings under section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and conspiring to commit an offence under section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1998 against eight individuals. The prosecution is over the alleged access of personal information from auto repair garages to obtain leads for personal injury claims. Over a period of 3-years, the defendants are alleged to have gained access to hundreds of thousands of individuals' personal data without consent.
