ICO publishes joint statement on international approach to age-assurance

On Monday, 9 September 2024, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced the publication of a new global initiative addressing children's privacy and online safety with a specific focus on age-assurance. The ICO developed and signed the Joint Statement on a Common International Approach to Age Assurance, which lays out shared principles for data protection authorities signatories. The goal is to foster better policy coordination and regulatory clarity for international companies, leading towards a more universal approach to addressing data protection and privacy concerns related to age assurance methods. The ICO signed the statement alongside data protection authorities from Argentina, Canada, Gibraltar, Mexico and the Philippines.
