ICO publishes new guidance on AI and data protection

04/05/2022 | ICO

The ICO has published new guidance on artificial intelligence (AI) and data protection that helps organisations realise the benefits AI projects can deliver by mitigating data protection risks and applying best practices. As the foreword explains, many of the same fundamental basic questions apply to AI as they do in any other project, such as accounting for the "risks arising from their processing of personal data" defined under the legal principle of accountability.

The new AI auditing framework allows you to develop your own AI systems or implement a third-party solution while following data protection best practices. The framework follows a clear methodology that includes auditing tools and procedures along with detailed guidance. A toolkit for auditing AI systems will be introduced at a later date. The guidance is intended for DPOs or GRC professionals and data scientists and related IT technology specialists.

An Excel spreadsheet is included to download so that organisations can edit as they progress through the various stages.
