New research published by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) reveals that genomic technology could soon revolutionise everyday life from healthcare to insurance and fitness.
The report, part of the ICO's Tech Futures series, highlights the challenges posed by rapid advancements in genomics. Key concerns include data security due to the personal nature of genomic information, the risk of discrimination in areas like insurance and law enforcement, and the complexities of transparency and consent when sharing data. In addition, because genomic data affects whole families, sharing individual information can inadvertently impact the lives of relatives, too.
The ICO calls for organisations to follow privacy-by-design principles and participate in its Regulatory Sandbox.
