The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has announced a provisional decision to issue a £6.09 million monetary penalty to Advanced Computer Software Group (Advanced) after an NHS ransomware attack in August 2022 led to the disruption of a number of critical services, including NHS 111 along with healthcare staff being unable to access patient records. Following an investigation, the ICO found that the personal information of 82,946 people was exfiltrated in the attack. The data obtained by hackers comprised phone numbers, medical records, and details about gaining entry to the homes of 890 people receiving home care. According to the ICO, Advanced had failed to implement appropriate technical measures such as multi-factor authentication.
The ICO will now consider any representations Advanced make before reaching a final decision.
