ICO settles £1.35m Easylife fine for £250,000

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has agreed to reduce the £1.35 million part of the £1.48 million monetary penalty issued to Easylife to just £250,000 following an appeal. The First-tier Tribunal (General Regulatory Chamber) approved the agreement and has otherwise dismissed the appeal.

The ICO fined the catalogue retailer £1.35 million in October 2022 for violations under Article 5(1)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) after the company used the purchase history of 145,000 customers without consent to make assumptions about their health and target them with related products.

The second part of the monetary penalty, the £130,000 fine for contravening regulation 21 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR), has been paid in full.
