Information Commissioner John Edwards' speech at the IAPP conference

Information Commissioner John Edwards' keynote speech at the IAPP Data Protection Intensive UK conference in London this week emphasised the human impact of data protection, advocating for a shift from focusing on procedural outputs to tangible outcomes that benefit individuals. Commissioner Edwards pointed to the "ripple effect" caused by personal data breaches, highlighting real-life examples illustrating how mishandling personal data can severely impact vulnerable individuals. In this regard, the Commissioner stressed the importance of understanding that data protection is not just about compliance but about safeguarding people's lives and that the responsibility for data protection extends beyond data protection officers to the entire organisation, including leadership, legal professionals, and the consumer.

One of the central themes of the speech concerned the protection of children's data. Commissioner Edwards touched on the recently announced investigations into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur and the ICO's role in advocating on behalf of young people and their parents in order to ensure social media platforms are transparent about how they collect and use children's data. The Commissioner also warned that all organisations must comply with the Children's Code, not just large online platforms.

The Commissioner also discussed ongoing work related to AI and biometrics, including projects looking into foundation models, automated decision-making in recruitment and the government, along with facial recognition technology use by police and law enforcement. The ICO will continue to keep a close eye on emerging technologies and provide regulatory guidance.

The speech concluded with the Commissioner outlining the direction the regulator will be taking in 2025. One of the work programmes the ICO will be looking at involves how websites use data, particularly in relation to advertising, online tracking and the need for transparency.
