John Edwards warns organisations to do better when protecting data

28/10/2024 | ICO

Information Commissioner John Edwards has issued a "stark warning" to organisations across the country that they "must do better" to protect personal data and prevent the "ripple effect" of personal data breaches.

According to figures released by the ICO, approximately 30 million people or 55% of UK adults have experienced lost or stolen personal data.

Of greater concern to the Commissioner is that 25% of these individuals received no support from the organisations responsible, while 32% learned about breaches through media reports rather than direct communication, exacerbating feelings of betrayal.

The data illustrates a critical oversight by many organisations, which often fail to acknowledge the profound harm caused by mishandling personal data.
