On Tuesday, 13 August 2024, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced that Jonathan Riches was found guilty of unlawfully accessing personal data in violation of section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1998. The court heard that Riches had illegally obtained the personal information of motorists from Enterprise Rent-A-Car to pursue personal injury claims for financial gain. As a result, Judge Frances Kirkham imposed a fine of £10,000 and additional costs of £1,700 on Mr Riches.
Riches had previously been obligated to pay Enterprise Rent-A-Car a £300,000 civil settlement and was interviewed by the ICO's criminal investigations team. Following a failed appearance in court and subsequent flight to the United States, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Mr Riches ultimately returned and surrendered to authorities in 2024.
