Study finds 14m people don't know how to erase their phone data

19/12/2024 | ICO

New research by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) reveals that 29% of UK adults do not know how to wipe personal information from old devices. With the festive season approaching, 27% plan to buy a new device, despite the average individual having three unused devices at home. In addition, 75% of people have kept at least one old device due to data security concerns, while 71% recognise the importance of erasing personal information, with 24% finding it too difficult. Unsurprisingly, younger adults, especially those aged 18-34, show less concern, with 14% admitting they wouldn't wipe their devices before disposal.

Suzanne Gordon, Director of Public Advice and Data Protection Complaints at the ICO, stressed the importance of safely clearing data, noting that simple methods like a factory reset can help protect against fraud and misuse. She urged the public to seek advice for responsible device disposal and data security.
