New research by URM Consulting has revealed that 27 out of 31 UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) enforcement actions by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) in 2024 targeted public sector organisations. These actions included fines, reprimands, and enforcement notices. Only three public sector cases resulted in monetary penalties:
- Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was fined £750,000 for leaking a spreadsheet with details of all serving officers and staff.
- Ministry of Defence (MOD) was fined £350,000 for accidentally exposing the identities of Afghan citizens who collaborated with the UK government.
- Central Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) received a £7,500 fine for accidentally revealing the personal details of individuals living with HIV.
