New research from Sophos has identified that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across the world face a shortage of cybersecurity expertise, creating a vicious cycle whereby stretched teams are increasingly likely to suffer from burnout, leading to new opportunities for threat actors.
In its Addressing the cybersecurity skills shortage in SMBs survey of 5000 IT and security professionals in 14 countries, Sophos highlighted that SMBs rank the lack of security skills as their second top cyber challenge behind zero-day threats. Such shortages make it difficult for teams to stay updated with the evolving threat landscape, with 96% of respondents finding aspects of investigating suspicious alerts problematic. In addition, the report noted that due to having fewer staff, threats go unmonitored for extended periods, with SMBs lacking active monitoring, investigation, or response to alerts for a third of the time, posing a further challenge given that 81% of attacks reportedly start outside of normal business hours.
