New research from ISACA indicates that European IT security teams are facing substantial challenges, including understaffing, underfunding, and skills gaps. The State of Cybersecurity 2024 report, based on a survey of over 1800 professionals, revealed that 61% of respondents believe their teams are understaffed, with 19% claiming they have unfilled entry-level vacancies and 48% stating the same for more experienced roles.
In addition, ISACA identified that 52% of respondents reported cybersecurity professionals having significant shortages in both technical and soft skills, including communication (54%), problem-solving (53%) and critical thinking (48%). The report highlights the importance of prioritising soft skills alongside technical skills when hiring. The findings underscore the urgent need to address such challenges in order to ensure the resilience of cybersecurity teams and protect critical infrastructure.
An accompanying ISACA blog article highlights the growing stress levels cybersecurity professionals are reporting. A second blog article addresses the growing internal crisis that is not rooted in technology or external threats but in the culture underpinning our current workforce.
