An excellent review of the Online Safety Bill regarding online anonymity by Mischon de Reya. It explains how Category one service providers like Facebook and Twitter will be required to offer adults users an option to verify their identity. A second requirement for providers will allow users to filter out non-verified users. The hope is that these features and a requirement to remove illegal harassment or threats will protect users against anonymous online abuse. But, will the measures be enough, or will they create a two-tier system that strengthens echo chambers, further increasing misinformation and other unintended consequence?
In related news, The Guardian reports child safety experts led by Barnardo’s are calling on the Government for immediate action to stop millions of underage viewers from being damaged by online pornography and extreme material. Meanwhile, the Government is on a PR exercise meeting celebrities who support the Online Safety Bill.
