NIST publishes 3 final post-quantum encryption standards

On Tuesday, 13 August 2024, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the publication of a final set of post-quantum encryption standards.

In total, NIST released three new Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) for:

  • FIPS 203 on Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism Standard;
  • FIPS 204 Module-Lattice Based Digital Signature Standard; and
  • FIPS 205 Stateless Hash-Based Digital Signature Standard.

A fourth draft standard, FIPS 206, is planned for late 2024. 

In related news, the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) published a blog article discussing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) following the advances in algorithm standards announced by NIST. The NCSC has also updated its PQC white paper to reflect this milestone.
