Ofcom fines TikTok £1.875m over inaccurate data on child protections

24/07/2024 | Ofcom

Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has fined TikTok £1.875 million for failing to accurately respond to a formal request for information about its parental controls safety feature. Ofcom sought information from video-sharing platforms under regulations that pre-date the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA) as part of a report highlighting the safety measures they have in place to protect children from harmful content. TikTok initially responded to Ofcom's request for information on 4 September 2023 but revised its submission on 1 December 2023 after finding the data it provided was inaccurate. Following an investigation, Ofcom said that it found "a number of failings in TikTok's data governance processes."

The fine includes a 25% reduction due to TikTok accepting Ofcom's findings and settling the case.
