ODI report identifies reforms needed for UK to benefit from AI

A new white paper from the Open Data Institute (ODI) has warned that weaknesses in the UK's technology infrastructure could jeopardise potential benefits from artificial intelligence (AI) development. The white paper highlights the need for agreed data standards for AI use and raises concerns about the lack of robust governance in AI training datasets. It recommends government actions such as ensuring broad access to high-quality data and enforcing data protection standards are upheld and empowering people to have a say in AI data use.

The report also underscores risks associated with widespread AI adoption, including reliance on a limited number of datasets lacking governance, which could lead to biases and unethical practices.

Moving forward, the ODI plans to develop an AI data transparency index and highlights the need to safeguard personal data and update intellectual property laws.
