Calls for DUA Bill amendment to prevent abuse of political targeting

01/04/2025 | Open Rights Group

An open letter to Chris Bryant, Minister of State for Data Protection and Telecoms at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and Angela Rayner, Deputy Prime Minister, initiated by the Open Rights Group and supported by signatories, including Privacy International, Big Brother Watch, Unlock Democracy, Fair Vote UK, Good Law Project, and Keep Our NHS Public warns of the potential for abuse of new powers in the Data (Use and Access) Bill (DUA Bill. They argue that clauses 70(4) and 71(5) would give any future Secretary of State discretion to remove constraints on how political parties can use personal data. The letter highlights comments by the House of Lords Constitution Committee that they "are not satisfied that the case has been sufficiently made to entrust the powers in these clauses to secondary legislation."

The letter calls on the government to amend the law to prevent any future government from changing the rules with minimal parliamentary oversight.
