In a startling insight into government plans to conduct surveillance on UK citizens, the Open Rights Group has undertaken a review of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS): Energy Price Guarantee scheme (EPG): privacy notice guidance. Under the EPG scheme, the government requires energy companies to provide household meter readings as evidence of usage to prevent fraud. These meter readings can reveal the types and times of day that appliances are being used. Furthermore, the privacy notice confirms this information may be shared with Credit Reference Agencies, Local Authorities along with Debt Collection agencies and that the data will be retained for up to ten years.
