ORG responds to ICO consultation on methods of age assurance

The Open Rights Group has submitted a response to the ICO consultation on methods of age assurance. While the ORG acknowledges the need to protect children online, they highlight age assurance methods will restrict other fundamental rights. In their submission, the ORG makes several recommendations, including not discarding self-declaration where there is a more serious interference with users' right to privacy. Age assurance methods based on estimation should never be mandated, and methods involving age verification should be limited to high-risk scenarios. In related news, the government has begun a trial to test facial age analysis technology in supermarkets.
