ORG responds to Ofcom's protecting against illegal harms online consultation

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has responded to Ofcom’s consultation on protecting people from illegal harms online. In its response, the ORG warns Ofcom about several urgent concerns in the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA) and Ofcom’s proposed guidance. In particular, the ORG reminds the regulator that it must continue to consider the broader implications of Freedom of expression, privacy, and democratic principles. The ORG further cautions that failure to do so may jeopardise fundamental rights and freedoms in the UK and establish a dangerous precedent for online censorship worldwide.
