DSIT expansion good news for broader adoption of AI and efficiency

15/07/2024 | PInsent Masons

An article from Pinsent Masons discusses the recent UK government announcement to expand, both in scope and size, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The author, Sarah Cameron, a technology law expert at Pinsent Masons, argues that the changes will not only enhance public sector efficiency but also allow for the status of artificial intelligence (AI) to be considered in broader contexts. The development is part of the incoming Labour government's strategy to revamp public services and bolster economic growth through the adoption of digital tools, data, and AI technology.

The integration of the Government Digital Service (GDS), the Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO), and the Incubator for AI (i.AI) will centralise efforts in digitally transforming public services within a single department, streamlining processes to enhance efficiency.

Cameron said, "The government's consolidation of DSIT, GDS, and CDDO is really good news. It may result in less focus on just generative AI and more of a focus in terms of convergence of technologies, as these forms of technology are all linked."
