Online services should start preparing for Online Safety Act enforcment

Online service providers that fall under the scope of the UK Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA) are advised to prepare early and conduct an illegal content risk assessment to avoid penalties from Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator. Ofcom is set to release its final illegal content risk assessment guidance and codes of practice in December, giving service providers three months to complete their assessments.

Chief executive Melanie Dawes has warned of strong enforcement actions against non-compliant services following investigations connecting online misinformation to the recent Southport riots.

In related news, Mischon de Reya highlighted an interview with Suzanne Cater, Enforcement Director at Ofcom, in which she confirmed that the regulator is ready to use its enforcement powers against the worst offending companies.
