Ruling increases risk of data protection claims for foreign media

Overseas publishers and foreign media are more likely to be on the receiving end of data protection claims before the English courts following a recent Court of Appeal ruling. The Soriano v Forensic News LLC judgement clarified the territorial scope of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. As a result, English judges could interpret the decision in the context of overseas publishers and claims on companies based outside of England and Wales.
