The European Commission is planning to introduce proposals to simplify the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) within the next few weeks in an effort to reduce regulatory burdens on businesses and enhance their competitiveness against rivals, particularly in the United States and China. This move is part of a broader effort by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to streamline EU regulations.

Digital Minister Caroline Stage Olsen of Denmark highlighted the necessity of streamlining the regulation to make compliance easier for businesses while maintaining essential privacy protections.

Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath confirmed that a simplification package for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), initially planned for 16 April, is now expected by 21 May or June at the latest.

The package will focus on reducing reporting requirements for organisations with fewer than 500 employees without altering the core objectives of the GDPR. Potential amendments include limiting requirements to keep records of processing activities and streamlining how businesses provide data protection impact assessments, which are considered burdensome for SMEs.
