An article in Politico reports on how European Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) are impacting the artificial intelligence (AI) plans of major technology companies more than six years after the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect. Google, Meta, X, and LinkedIn have all recently paused or delayed AI projects in the EU due to regulatory uncertainty. Enforcement of the GDPR by DPAs, such as the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), has led to the blocking of several AI rollouts. The main issue for DPAs concerns how tech companies handle personal data, and, in particular, how they determine a valid legal basis for processing data for purposes of training AI systems. For now, the issue appears to be a circle that can't be squared.
