European Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová has warned more EU General Data Protection Regulation enforcement power will have to be given to EU institutions if consistent enforcement among member states cannot be reached. Jourová said member states will need to "collectively show that GDPR enforcement is effective" or risk potential reform that would "go towards more centralization." Those added powers would likely be handed to the European Commission or the European Data Protection Board. The coverage of Jourová's speech in TechCrunch also took aim at adtech companies such as Google and Facebook for failing to take data protection seriously, and instead choosing “legal tricks” over true compliance and privacy by design. This is the 2nd time in a month Jourová has discussed GDPR enforcement not working.
