Government's immigrant tracking smartwatch supplier, DPIA revealed

Following revelations in August about government plans requiring migrants to scan their faces up to 5 times a day using smartwatches equipped with facial recognition software, Privacy International (PI) provides additional information on the background and one particular supplier. First, on the background, PI obtained a Home Office data protection impact assessment (DPIA) from August 2021, assessing the implications of GPS tagging migrants. The DPIA describes that the data could be shared with the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice and the police. Then, by searching through public contracts, PI discovered that British tech company Buddi Limited is the government's smartwatch supplier under a contract published on 10 May 2022.
