UK Government accepts historic mass surveillance data rights violations

The Government has acknowledged that its historic mass surveillance powers violated the right to privacy and freedom of expression and has compensated victims. It admitted that section 8(4) of the now-repealed Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) violated the right to privacy under Articles 8 and freedom of expression under 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Furthermore, regarding Article 10, the Government admitted that how security agencies handled confidential journalistic material violated fundamental rights protected by Article 10.
