The Competition and Markets Authority has reached an agreement with Google regarding changes to user-tracking through third-party cookies in its browser. If accepted, Google confirmed the changes it has offered on the way it uses customer data would be implemented globally. The commitments include reducing assess to IP addresses, clarifying internal limits on what data it uses, and extending the time for any pledges to 6 years. Read the CMA press release. CMA Chief Executive Andrea Coscelli said, "We have always been clear that Google’s efforts to protect user’s privacy cannot come at the cost of reduced competition. That’s why we have worked with the Information Commissioner’s Office, the CMA’s international counterparts and parties across this sector throughout this process to secure an outcome that works for everyone." The CMA will consult on these new commitments until 17th December 2021.
