Eko group files GDPR complaints over Meta's targeted ads

The Eko group, an online rights activist organisation, has filed complaints against Meta with data protection authorities (DPAs) in Norway, Germany, and Spain. The complaint alleges that Meta had disregarded user requests to opt out of data collection and targeted advertisements.

Eko gathered evidence by observing the continued delivery of targeted ads to 5,000 of its members who had explicitly asked Meta to stop processing their personal data.

A Meta spokesperson said they were unaware of the specific complaints but confirmed the company's commitment to user privacy.

Tobias Judin, Head of International at Norway's DPA, Datatilsynet, confirmed receipt of complaints from Eko and has forwarded them to the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), the lead supervisory authority for Meta in Europe. Judin highlighted the importance of the right to object to invasive tracking and monitoring for advertising purposes, stating it may violate fundamental rights and that the DPA would continue to be involved in the case.
