French antitrust regulator fines Apple €150m over app tracking feature

The French competition regulator, the Autorité de la concurrence, has fined Apple €150 million for abusing its dominant position in the mobile application advertising sector on iOS and iPadOS devices.

The regulator concluded that Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) system, while intended to protect personal data, was implemented in a way that disproportionately harmed third-party app developers and advertising service providers. The ATT system's implementation led to excessive consent collection windows, complicating the user experience and negatively impacting the neutrality of the device.

The regulator noted that smaller publishers were particularly affected, as they rely heavily on third-party data collection to fund their operations, unlike larger, vertically integrated platforms.
