US appeals court upholds TikTok divestiture law

A US federal appeals court upheld a law on Friday requiring the Chinese technology company ByteDance to sell or divest its short video social media platform TikTok in the United States by January 19, 2025, or face a nationwide ban. The decision is a significant victory for the US Justice Department and opponents of the app. TikTok plans to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.

In an update on Monday, Reuters reports ByteDance asked an appeals court to temporarily block the impending US ban ahead of a Supreme Court review.
