In response to the EU Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, the European Commission defended its monitoring of the Irish Data Protection Commission's (DPC) record of EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) enforcement. The office of the EU Ombudsman opened an inquiry into the enforcement of GDPR in Ireland in February and requested further information about how the Commission investigates the DPC's application of data protection rules. In response, the Commission wrote that it "requested information from the DPC and receives, on a confidential basis and roughly every two months, an overview of the large-scale statutory inquiries."
UPDATE: 061022 - Johnny Ryan of the Irish Council of Civil Liberties (ICCL) wrote an open letter to the EU Ombudsman eight months after she opened her inquiry. The letter criticised the Commission after it has "presented little by way of evidence that it is keeping an eye on how Ireland polices Big Tech."
