Miles Brundage, a senior artificial general intelligence (AGI) readiness advisor at OpenAI, has announced his departure from his dream job, citing concerns about the overall preparedness of the company and the artificial intelligence (AI) industry as a whole.
In a Substack post, Brundage stressed that no leading AI organisation is ready for AGI, highlighting gaps in readiness that he believes are significant. Brundage also indicated that this awareness is shared among OpenAI's leadership. Furthermore, Brundage warned that ensuring AI and AGI benefit humanity will require intentional decisions from governments, non-profits, and the private sector, underscoring the need for robust public discussions focused on risk mitigation and equitable benefits. Unfortunately, there is a lack of effective AI policy ideas and warned against a competitive mindset between democratic and autocratic nations, believing it could compromise safety.
Moving forward, Brundage said, "I will lose access to some information about the state-of-the-art, but I think there is plenty of information in the public domain to justify a sense of urgency and I have some ideas about how to pull together the narrative more effectively than has been done so far."
Following his departure, OpenAI's AGI readiness team will be reorganised and spread across other departments.
