Review warns UK urgently needs new laws on use of biometrics

An independent review of the governance of biometric data in England and Wales published by the Ada Lovelace Institute has come to the conclusion that new laws are required. The review, led by Matthew Ryder QC, warns the current legal regime in the UK is "fragmented, confused and failing to keep pace" with biometric technological developments. In a Statement, Ryder said, "We urgently need an ambitious new legislative framework specific to biometrics. We must not allow the use of biometric data to proliferate under inadequate laws and insufficient regulation." The report identifies ten recommendations.
