Former-GCHQ intern pleads guilty to national security offence under CMA

Hasaan Arshad, a 25-year-old former GCHQ intern from Rochdale, has pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 3ZA of the Computer Misuse Act (CMA), admitting to actions that risked national security.

On 24 August 2022, Arshad took his work phone into a top-secret area at GCHQ, connected it to a secure workstation and transferred highly sensitive data from a top-secret computer to his phone. Arshad subsequently moved that data from the phone to a hard drive connected to his personal home computer.

Arshad will be sentenced on 13 June.
