FTC report lays bare the extent of social media firms' vast surveillance

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released a damning report detailing the data-gathering practices of nine major tech companies, including Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Discord, Reddit, Amazon, Snap, TikTok and X (Twitter) between January 2019 and December 2020. The report indicates that these companies collect extensive personal information from users and share it with an unknown number of third-parties. The FTC's findings lay bare the full extent of the lack of control that users have over their personal data and highlight the platforms' inadequate data-minimisation practices. The report calls for federal privacy regulations and urges policymakers to address the vast surveillance of users by technology companies. Additionally, the FTC recommends that the companies invest in limiting data retention and sharing, restricting targeted advertising, and strengthening protections for teenagers.
