ICO steps over concerns schools using facial recognition

19/10/2021 | The Guardian

The ICO is set to intercede following concerns about the use of facial recognition on children queueing for lunch in school canteens. On Monday, nine Scottish schools in North Ayrshire began taking payments for school lunches by scanning pupils' faces because it is cheaper and more Covid secure than other means. Other schools are interested in the scheme. The ICO said it would contact North Ayrshire council and recommend a "less intrusive" approach where possible. Privacy campaigners Big Brother Watch has written to the schools outlining their concerns and urging them to stop. "No child should have to go through border-style identity checks just to get a school meal," she said. "We are supposed to live in a democracy, not a security state. Politico also reports on the concerns from privacy campaigners about the move to scan children's faces in order to save money. Meanwhile, Mischon de Reya provides a review of the legal implications.

UPDATE: 201021 - Sky News reveals 27 schools in England are using facial recognition for lunch payments with a further 60 schools set to deploy no contact payment systems due to COVID.
