Kate and Gerry McCann have lost their European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) challenge to the decision to throw out their libel case by the Portuguese supreme court. The McCanns had argued an infringement of their rights under article 6, the right to a fair hearing, and article 8, the right to respect for private and family life that damaged their reputation, good name and right to be presumed innocent. However, the seven judges decided there had been no violation of article 8, and their complaint under article 6 was inadmissible. An ECHR press release said: "National authorities had not failed in their positive obligation to protect the applicants' right to respect for their private life."
