Meta has confirmed that it will begin testing end-to-end encryption (E2E) as the default option for its Messenger app on Google Android and Apple iOS devices for some users. The test will be limited to only a few hundred users initially in order to determine that it works as it should. The company had planned to roll out E2E encryption as the default in 2022; however, it pushed the date back to 2023 after warnings from child safety campaigners the move would shield abusers from detection.
