Meta targets hackathon at reducing NHS A&E waiting times

Meta is advancing its initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the UK's public sector by providing development funding aimed at reducing waiting times in NHS Accident & Emergency departments. In a bid to establish a foothold amidst competition from other US technology companies, Meta hosted its first European "hackathon," engaging over 200 programmers to explore applications of its Llama AI system in public services aligned with the Labour government's priorities. 

Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, addressed participants at the hackathon, while UK AI minister Feryal Clark highlighted the potential for government adoption of AI technologies like Meta's open-source model to enhance key government missions. In response to questions about the company's motivations for offering this free technology, Clegg explained that fostering a Llama-based innovation ecosystem could ultimately benefit Meta by making it easier to integrate new developments into their own products.
