A freedom of information request has revealed thousands of unaccompanied children have been photographed and had their fingerprints taken by police as part of an immigration enforcement operation called Operation Innerste. The multi-agency initiative was designed to protect children arriving in the UK from traffickers "safeguarded" 2,177 children aged 2 to 18 between 2018 and June this year. Child protection groups expressed concern about the involvement of police instead of social workers.
