Special education needs data breach in Northern Ireland

05/08/2024 | The Guardian

The education minister in Northern Ireland has issued an unreserved apology following a data breach that exposed the personal details of over 400 individuals who had expressed interest in contributing to a review of special education needs. The personal data breach occurred when the education department mistakenly sent a spreadsheet containing the names, email addresses, and titles of 407 individuals to 174 people. The spreadsheet also included comments from some of the individuals. Those who received the spreadsheet in error have been asked to delete the information. The education minister, Paul Givan, has initiated a full investigation into the breach and assured that measures will be put in place to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has also been notified, and ongoing updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
