The new Labour government has cancelled £1.3 billion of funding pledged by the Conservatives for technology and artificial intelligence (AI) projects, including the UK’s first next-generation supercomputer.
A government spokesperson underscored their commitment to building technology infrastructure that drives growth and opportunities across the UK. However, they explained that difficult spending decisions are being made across all departments in light of billions of pounds of unfunded commitments from the previous government as part of the broader effort to restore economic stability and fulfil the national mission for growth.
Approximately £300m in funding for the AI Research Resource has already been distributed and continues as planned.
